There are two sensors that can produce photos with a resolution of 48 MP, Sony IMX586 for the pro version and Samsung GM1 for regular sensors.
Both are sensors with a large half-inch with a 0.8 micron pixel size.
Each pixel combines four pixels to produce 12 MP images.

Instead of producing 48MP photos, Samsung uses software to produce 48 MP images.
However, on its website, Samsung says that GM1 produces 48MP images by combining 4 pixels into one, similar to Sony IMX586, as reported by Smartprix.
